Tsum Valley Trek

Overview

Situated in the northern part of Gorkha, Tsum valley is a sacred Himalayan valley with Tibetan communities with rich Tibetan culture being preserved for centuries.

Trek to Tsum valley passes through beautiful mountain villages, forests, waterfalls, caves, passes, wildlife especially the Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep. Ganesh Himal, SiringiHimal, BoudhaHimal ranges are also the major attractions during the trek. A famous Buddhist saint named Milarepamedidated in the caves of the mountains which includes ancient monasteries like Mu Gumba, RachenGumba, DephyudonmaGumba.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Sotikhola (730m)

Early morning at 7am drive to Sotikhola via Arughat. There are three routes to follow: Benighat, Gorkha Bazaar and DhadingBesi. The driving duration is about 8 hrs with lunch offered en route, usually in Arughat. Ganesh Himal, LamjungHimal, Manaslu and Annapurna mountains are visible on the way.

Day 02: Trek from Sotikhola to Machikhola (930m)

Today you will start your trek from Sotikhola following the regular Manaslu circuit trek route till EkleBhatti. The trail follows the upper section of Budi Gandaki River passing by Lakubesi and NauliKhola villages. Just before NauliKhola, you will catch the view of SringiHimal. Machikhola is a small village with majority Gurung inhabitants. Lunch and dinner in Machikhola.

Day 03: Machikhola to Jagat (1342m)

The trail, which is part of regular Manaslu Circuit trek, follows the gravel road till Dovan. The first village you will come upon is Khorlabesi followed by Tatopani, a natural hostspring, and then Dovan. It takes 3 hrs to reach Dovan where you will have your lunch. Thereafter we trek to YuroBagar or Phat by carefully crossing a steel pavement carved in cliff. In one a half hour from here will arrive in Jagat where your permits are checked. Jagat population is a mix of Gurung and other ethnic groups.

Day 04: Jagat to Lokuwa(Lokpa) 2240m

After breakfast, we start our trek to Lokpa. We will still be following the original Manaslu Circuit trail. Leaving Jagat we arrive at Salleri after about an hour. We will continue our trek to Ekle via Philim reaching EkleBhatti(1600m) where we will have our lunch. EkleBhatti is where local administrative office for rural municipality is located.

After lunch, we go down for 30 minutes till we reach a suspension bridge over Budi Gandaki River. Instead of going over the bridge, we turn left from here and make one and half hour uphill trek to Lokpa. You will enjoy the views of Ganesh Himal and ShringiHimal on the way.

Day 5: Lokwa to Chumling(2300)

Today, you will trek about 4 to 5 hrs. full of ups and downs. The first 45 minutes is a downhill trek followed by 2 hrs of steep uphill hike. You will arrive at Chumling at lunch time. Dinner will be at Chumling.

Day 6: Chumling to Lamagaon(3300m)

As other days, you will start your trek after breakfast. After about 2 hrs trek from Chumling, you will reach SarpuKhola. You will cross it and start uphill trek to Chhekampar. On your trek to Chhekampar, you will see good view of Ganesh Himal from Lapche(3771m) where Tsum valley starts. Your lunch will be in Chhekampar today after which the trek starts to Lamagaon. During the trek, you will enjoy the view of long and beautiful valley along with chortens.

Lamagaon is a popular Buddhist destination in Tsum valley. On your free time, we suggest you to visit Milarepa cave nearby.

Day 7: Lamagaon to Mu Gumba(3705m)

After breakfast we resume our trek and reach Lar in 30 minutes and another 30 minutes to be in Phurbe (3251m).  You will have to pass by an impressive gate while entering Chule. Your lunch will be at Nile before heading towards Mu Gumba. People here follow Tibetan culture and lifestyle and can see them offering prayers in Mu Gompa monastery where over 100 monks live.

Day 8: Mugumba to Chhe Kampar (3030m) via RachenGomba(3240m)

Today we start our return route. On our way back we pass through Nile and arrive at RachenGumba (3240m), which is another popular monastery after Mu Gompa. RachenGumba is exclusively built and dedicated for Buddhist nuns. From here we trek back to lamagaon to have your lunch. The last leg of our journey takes us to Chhekampar.

Day 9: Chhekampar to Lokuwa(Lokpa)2240m

The trail leads us back to Lokuwa as we follow our previous route backwards. Lunch will be at Chumling which is a 3.30 hrs downhill trek from Chhekampar. It takes another 3 hrs trek to reach Lokuwa.

Day 10: Lokuwa to Jagat(1410m)

Within one and a half hour trek from Lokuwa we will join the Manaslu circuit trek route. We will continue trek until Sotikhola and in about 2 hrs time, we reach Philim via EkleBhatti. We will have our lunch in Philim. It is only 2 hrs trek from Philim to reach Jagat.

Day 11: Jagat to Machhikhola(930m)

This is a bit easy day considering the whole trip. After breakfast, we start our trek to Machhikhola, using the same route that we used before. We will stop for lunch at Khorlabesi after passing through YuruKhola, Dovan and Tatopani villages. After lunch continue the trek to Machhikhola.

Day 12: Machhikhola to SotiKhola(730m)

This is probably the easiest day of the entire journey. We will start our trek late today, at about 9am. We trek through Khanibesi followed by villages of NauliKhola and Lapubessi. We will arrive at SotiKhola at lunch time.

Day 13: SotiKhola to Kathmandu

It is about 9 hrs drive to Kathmandu from SotiKhola via Arughat. Lunch will be en route, near Malekhu. After arriving in Kathmandu, you will be dropped at your hotel.

  • International Airfare to and from Kathmandu.
  • Excess baggage charges.
  • Extra night accommodation in Kathmandu because of early arrival, late departure, early return from mountain (Due to any reason) than the scheduled itinerary.
  • Lunch and dinner in Kathmandu (And also in the case of early return from mountain than the scheduled itinerary).
  • Travel, Trekking and Helicopter Rescue insurance.
  • Personal high altitude medicines, first aid kits, equipments, gears, cloths etc.
  • Personal expenses (Phone Calls, Laundry, bar bills during the trekking, Battery recharge of camera or mobile, extra porters if you wish to take, mineral water, Shower etc).
  • Tips for Guides and Porters according to custom of trekking in Nepal since long though this is not obligation if your trip is not satisfied with our staffs.
